I made my own birthday cake. Same one I make every year. Haven’t found one I like better. I ate it at my friend Whitney’s house back in the early 2000’s and immediately demanded the recipe. Sunset Magazine, as it turned out. Called for reconstituting, roasting and making a purée of pasilla chilies and it was a big long ordeal and then I discovered pasilla chile powder at the Hayward Safeway so that made the whole thing about 20 minutes total prep and 15 minutes of baking.
