You Can be a FiddleStar

I post things about fiddling. And how we can all be better at it.

#tbt to my violin teacher from back in the day. I believe I took lessons from him when I was around 8-10 or thereabouts. I remember hours and hours (or what seemed like hours and hours) of long bows. No actual songs, just bows. He died recently. I did get a chance to visit him in a rehab hospital and I thanked him for his patience and consistency. He didn’t care if I thought he was cool. He just wanted me to reach for excellence. That takes dedication. Also, he played a Strad and he let me play it once. #violin #violinteacher #johncreightonmurray #sfsymphony #stradivarius

Realized I should be posting pics of our Students of the Month. We send out announcements to all the students each month but I thought you should all know! We’ll start with March… Addy Keisel from Mapleton, UT! Addy is such a rock star. I’ve been teaching her and her two sisters for a year and a half and it is always a blast. But the main reason Addy is the Student of the Month is that she’s done some real growing as a player AND as a student. When she first started taking lessons from me she mostly read music and felt more comfortable learning a new tune when there were pieces of paper in front of her and bowings all marked out in advance. She then made the transition to learning from videos and recordings and doing her own tab with me helping her decide the bowings. And now, she’s learned almost all of Apple Blossom by ear, using no tab, and with a few bowing tweaks from me here and there but mostly just on her own and with her own instincts. It makes me so proud knowing that she’ll be able to go out in the world and hear tunes and play them and sound fabulous without anything in the way of her own enjoyment of the music. She’s worked so hard to change the way she learns and it’s made such a difference. (Not to mention, she’s had some pretty major successes in the Utah contest scene lately - she’s a tough competitor who always brings it.) Congratulations Addy. You are mature beyond your years and an absolute delight to teach. #fiddle #fiddleteacher #studentofthemonth #proudteacher (at Ridgetop, TN)

I am excited to embark on a new chapter of my working life - I recently gave my notice to the Pam Tillis organization and will no longer be touring with her or Lorrie Morgan (on their awesome Grits and Glamour Tour). I must admit, I'm sad to be leaving. It's been an incredible four years and I have learned so much. Thanks to Pam, her amazing husband/manager Matt Spicher, and my bandmates, especially the lovely and talented Mary Sue Englund, with whom I spent more time over the last few years than I did with my husband. And I wouldn't trade a minute of it...
