You Can be a FiddleStar

I post things about fiddling. And how we can all be better at it.

We went to @harvardartmuseums to find a Rothko and we looked and looked and we didn’t see one so we almost left and then @dancing_mur said we can’t leave without making extra sure there really isn’t one so she asked a lady at the desk and that lady showed us exactly where there was one and wouldn’t you know it we had walked right by it and I said, “Well, no wonder, this looks really transitional so I didn’t recognize it” and then I when I looked at the little placard thingie it said that Rothko viewed this as one of his most transitional pieces and I felt pretty good that I knew that and that’s the that on that. #rothko #transitional #motherdaughterroadtrip (at Harvard Art Museums)

I am a descendant of Irish, English, and Portuguese immigrants. This statue represents Irish immigrants who moved to the new world in order to take advantage of a whole new set of opportunities. I’m proud of my ancestors and grateful for the courage they possessed and the chances they were given. In the case of my family, and many others, they were fleeing poverty and (many historians believe, genocidal) famine. Like so many people are experiencing today, their lives were unsustainable in their home countries. #motherdaughterroadtrip #boston @urbanadventures (at Irish Famine Memorial)
@dancing_mur loves to celebrate all cultures. Today in Boston we ran across a Puerto Rican pride festival during our @urbanadventures walking tour in Boston and well, you can see what happened. Mur turned it into a dancing tour. (Also, shout out to the catlike reflexes of that woman just minding her own business on the sidewalk.) #motherdaughterroadtrip #boston #dancingmur (at Boston, Massachusetts)

Traveling with @dancingmur is an emotional roller coaster. I tried to capture some typical reaction shots in this photographic series.
1. I just told a very funny joke, I think it had to do with schnitzel. Maybe spaetzel.
2. Mur just correctly guessed Lucinda Williams’ “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” on the restaurant playlist.
3. Mur describes the feeling she got when she first heard Lucinda Williams’ “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.”
4. Jimi Hendrix comes over the bar speakers. Also, it turns out they have Monkey Shoulder scotch at this bar - dual reaction shot.
5. I explain to Mur what “funfetti” is. (at Portland, Maine)
Mur started feeling the Americana playlist at the fantastic German restaurant tonight. Something came over her and well, you know… My favorite part is when she waves to the guy who started dancing on the sidewalk when he saw her through the giant picture window. @dancing_mur can heal the 🌎 #dancingmur #whosaysyoucantdancetoasingersongwriter #motherdaughterroadtrip (at Schulte & Herr)

Since I live in Central time, we’re going by Central time so I don’t wanna hear any guff from you East coasters. It’s still #fiddlinarthursmith Tuesday in Nashville. Granted, I’m in Maine. Neither here nor there. The main (Maine) point is that this is the Peacock Rag and you can’t possibly deny that this is, or is close to, the pinnacle of the Arthur Smith tunes. Most of you know the old yarn about how I used to think I hated this tune and then discovered (with the help of my dear friend Bryan) I was terrifically mistaken. I even put it on my most recent album, to make sure I properly repented. Here’s a nice easy going run of it, in case you forgot how much you love it too. Wanna see the whole thing? You know what to do. #fiddle #fiddlestar #fiddlelesson #peacockrag And here’s a hashtag that popped up when I put in Peacock Rag. I don’t wanna know… #peacockragestick (at Fiddlestar)

Sometimes I just marvel at the friends and music in my life. Until I moved to Nashville, I never once lived in a house longer than three years. By the time I was 34 I had lived in 36 houses. I was sure I’d be an itinerant traveler for the rest of my life. But somehow, this place inspired me to put down some roots and make peace with my surroundings. Part of it was just the natural growing up process and part of it was the sheer magic of so many of the days I’ve spent since I moved here. Like today. It was a delight to see and play tunes with a friend I’d only met once before irl but feel like I’ve known for so long. I hope you’re enjoying your visit @kieranfiddle and thanks again @barry_southern for introducing us all those years ago. And thanks to my dear ones @tylerandal and @brianosonfun at @theviolinshop for providing a home away from home. And hey @ronblockakus - it’s about time you learned to play the fiddle for real! And right there at the end, you’ll see my girl @ivyphillipsfiddle on the other side of the counter at @cartervintageguitars from where you’d normally find her. Happy first day! Just a lovely afternoon of friends and music. Thanks, Nashville. #fiddle #fiddlestar #nashville #puttingdownroots Most 📸(especially the arty fiddle ones): @ronblockakus (at Nashville, Tennessee)
Howdy friends and neighbors and supporters of #fiddlinarthursmith Tuesdays! Just when you thought Arthur couldn’t possibly write another 1 4 5 ascending progression tune in G, we bring you the K.C. Stomp. But this one has the added bonus of sounding like the beginning of San Antonio Rose. Also, it’s basically all double stops (which are perfect for shoring up your key of G double stop game) until the super random notey part that comes out of nowhere. Don’t get caught sleepin’. Full version on the Facebook and the YouTube, forever and always. #fiddle #fiddlelesson #fiddlestar #GCDBaby #2ndand3rdposition (at Fiddlestar)

I am excited to embark on a new chapter of my working life - I recently gave my notice to the Pam Tillis organization and will no longer be touring with her or Lorrie Morgan (on their awesome Grits and Glamour Tour). I must admit, I'm sad to be leaving. It's been an incredible four years and I have learned so much. Thanks to Pam, her amazing husband/manager Matt Spicher, and my bandmates, especially the lovely and talented Mary Sue Englund, with whom I spent more time over the last few years than I did with my husband. And I wouldn't trade a minute of it...
