You Can be a FiddleStar

I post things about fiddling. And how we can all be better at it.

And then the sounds of the old time fiddle and banjo music rang out through the hollers and also the den. #nashvillefiddlebanjocamp #nashvilleacousticcamps #fiddle #banjo #oldtime #indiankilledawoodcock (at Fiddlestar)

Come join us at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in #nashville for a truly rare event - @adamspickoftheday and I are playing a show together! The @officialcmhof found it in their hearts to feature me in their Musician’s Spotlight series and who better to join me than my favorite guitar player? We’re going to play some tunes, tell some stories, and generally spend an hour trying to entertain you with music and frivolity. 1 p.m. Central time in the Ford Theater. (at Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum)

Today, on the day of the second annual #womensmarch I’d like to share this photo of @ginaclowes1 and me from last week’s tour with @cjnightdrivers. I heard that there has been some talk on social media about whether or not sexism, sexual harassment, and sexual assault did and/or do still exist in the bluegrass industry and I’d like to weigh in on the topic. First, Alison Krauss’ Grammy count is not a valid argument for the lack of gender issues in bluegrass. That’s so ridiculous I don’t even want to use a whole sentence on it. Second, if you’re not a woman who played or plays bluegrass for a living, just shut up. Unless you’re saying, “I do not know what you’re experiencing as an artist and side person but I support you”. I’ve been told I couldn’t join a band, not because I couldn’t cut the gig but because the band members were worried their wives wouldn’t like it. I’ve been sexually harassed and assaulted by other musicians and fans while at gigs and festivals. I’ve been catcalled for what I wore on stage and simultaneously told it wasn’t sexy enough. I’ve been told by both genders that we should all just “shut up and pick” and that it shouldn’t matter whether or not I’m a girl and that I shouldn’t make an issue of it. Well, until it actually doesn’t matter, I’m going to make an issue of it. Until women are treated equally in this business and until women are safe everywhere, it’s an issue. Also, this tune that we’re playing in this photo is super kickass and Gina wrote it and you should pick up her new album. 📸: Chris Jones and general support and encouragement by both he and @jonweisberger (at AnzaClub Vancouver)

Last night in Portland was a lovely evening all around. I got to play a really fun show in a beautiful venue with my dear friends @cjnightdrivers and I got to hang out with some other dear friends who all happen to be fiddle players who inspire me. Today it’s home again, home again, back to snow and confusing temperatures swings but also all my favorite boys like #sirwinstoncup and @adamspickoftheday. Now we ready the house for fiddle and banjo camp. #bluegrass #pnw #fiddlefriends #cuemeimnewhere (at Cerimon House)

It’s pretty easy to alphabetize the cast of a one man show. This was a beautiful show and I’m grateful I saw it with Mur. So many important lessons about the stories we tell and just as many difficult questions about the lives of those we love. John Lithgow is a classic actor and story teller and we are lucky to have him. #storiesbyheart #motherdaughterroadtrip #nyc2018 #pgwodehouse #ringlardner (at American Airlines Theatre)

Last #dancingmur video for this #nyc2018 #motherdaughterroadtrip but it’s important because it clarifies something very important about Mur: she loves her some gospel music. Especially if there are children singing it and bonus points for there being brunch food nearby. As far as any of those things go, it doesn’t get any better than this. @singharlemchoir brings it at @ginnysupperclub every Sunday morning. If you’re not familiar with Vi Higginson’s vocal performance program up in Harlem, I suggest you get familiar. Music teachers change lives. #gospelbrunch #harlem #singharlemchoir #downbytheriverside #mymomclapsonthe2and4 (at Ginny’s Supper Club)

Just a little bonus #dancingmur video for your late Saturday night because we just got back from the @nycwjf and we’re still all aglow from seeing @jasonprover and his Sneak Thievery Orchestra (which makes two nights in a row we’ve seen the amazing Miki Yamanaka on piano) and it was a fantastic venue and a lovely show. Not pictured: the ten courses of Scandinavian food we ate at @aquavitnyc earlier because trust me, photos wouldn’t do that meal justice. #murhasallhereggsinonebasket #hotjazzstage #theroxy #tradjazz #motherdaughterroadtrip #nyc2018 (at The Django)

I am excited to embark on a new chapter of my working life - I recently gave my notice to the Pam Tillis organization and will no longer be touring with her or Lorrie Morgan (on their awesome Grits and Glamour Tour). I must admit, I'm sad to be leaving. It's been an incredible four years and I have learned so much. Thanks to Pam, her amazing husband/manager Matt Spicher, and my bandmates, especially the lovely and talented Mary Sue Englund, with whom I spent more time over the last few years than I did with my husband. And I wouldn't trade a minute of it...
