Today, on the day of the second annual #womensmarch I’d like to share this photo of @ginaclowes1 and me from last week’s tour with @cjnightdrivers. I heard that there has been some talk on social media about whether or not sexism, sexual harassment, and sexual assault did and/or do still exist in the bluegrass industry and I’d like to weigh in on the topic. First, Alison Krauss’ Grammy count is not a valid argument for the lack of gender issues in bluegrass. That’s so ridiculous I don’t even want to use a whole sentence on it. Second, if you’re not a woman who played or plays bluegrass for a living, just shut up. Unless you’re saying, “I do not know what you’re experiencing as an artist and side person but I support you”. I’ve been told I couldn’t join a band, not because I couldn’t cut the gig but because the band members were worried their wives wouldn’t like it. I’ve been sexually harassed and assaulted by other musicians and fans while at gigs and festivals. I’ve been catcalled for what I wore on stage and simultaneously told it wasn’t sexy enough. I’ve been told by both genders that we should all just “shut up and pick” and that it shouldn’t matter whether or not I’m a girl and that I shouldn’t make an issue of it. Well, until it actually doesn’t matter, I’m going to make an issue of it. Until women are treated equally in this business and until women are safe everywhere, it’s an issue.
