She’s in San Francisco for Pride and is marching with the California Bluegrass Association float and musicians and I’m in Nashville finishing up our Nashville Dobro Camp. We’re 2000 miles apart but we’re together in the ways that matter - the support and love of great music and equality for everyone who plays it. We never could have seen it coming - this family we have cultivated since we’ve been hosting all these camps over the last few years. It never would have occurred to us that people would start to see our home as their second home and that the music and the learning and the love and the laughs would bind us to dozens of incredible people whom we now consider just as much a part of our lives as the families we were born into. Robin Suskind is here right now for #nashvilledobrocamp and this weekend marks his 10th camp with us. He has grown as a musician, and helped many others to grow along the way. A #birthdayinjune present from my #bff @marysueenglund. Because my birthday is actually in December, for those of you keeping track, but Paul Simon was here now. And as musicians ourselves, we always think we know what we’re doing but we stumbled away from this show stunned and amazed by what we had just seen. The musicians of yMusic were so incredibly versatile and captivating (they play strings AND brass and what are you even doing with your life?) and the guitarists and rhythm section were true pros, in every sense. The sheer amount of material and arrangements and of course Paul Simon’s breadth of genres and influences - and not a music stand or piece of paper on stage anywhere. This was a beautiful retrospective of his career filled with joy. And he played my two favorites. Which always makes a fan swoon. What a night.
