Texas Style Tuesday - Liverpool Hornpipe

Hey friends! It’s a little late on Tuesday but I got this request from your friend and mine, Leo Hickman, and I wanted to make sure to get this one out for #texasstyletuesday. Looks like your basic Irish or maybe English hornpipe, probably mid-1800s, but like all things Texas style, you add a four chord, and maybe a little two minor in the B part, a few chromatics and you mess up the order of the notes most of the time and you’ve got yourself a tune. This tune appears on my favorite fiddle record of all time which of course makes it extra special. What’s my favorite fiddle record of all time, you might be asking? Have you been listening AT ALL??? Omg, Old Sport by Texas Shorty and @johnhartfordofficial is my favorite fiddle record of all time. And this is the last time I’m going to tell you.

That’s not true. I’ll never stop talking about that record. I love you all and I hope you’re dressing up for Halloween. I am.

Hi. There is a profile of me in this month’s Bluegrass Unlimited and Béla Fleck is on the cover. I’m not new to this industry and have been a professional musician and teacher for actual decades, but damn, this is just really cool. The article is about all the different things I’ve been doing as an educator and I think that actually means the most to me out of all of it. I just wanted to say thank you to Dan Miller for the fun interview and to all my students and campers, especially those of you have worked so hard over the last 18 months in the midst of all the dark times. I love you all so much.

Also, please read the articles about @mikefiddle and Don Maddox. I’ve always loved Mike’s playing and while he’s on a difficult journey at the moment, we need to make sure to honor the incredible music he’s already put out into the world. Don Maddox used to come around the fiddle contests in Northern California, long after he was the only surviving member of The Maddox Brothers and Rose and he was so kind and generous to everyone. He had a great fiddle style and was so lovely to be around.
