You Can be a FiddleStar

I post things about fiddling. And how we can all be better at it.

Still pushing some New York content. Won’t be done for a while. Here’s a clip of a really good thing that we saw. This is Marc Cohn with the Blind Boys of Alabama. This chorus of Walking in Memphis is excellent but you’re bummed I didn’t capture the moment where Jimmy from the Blind Boys introduced Marc as “my first Hebrew friend.” #motherdaughterroadtrip #nyc2019 #hebrewfriends #walkinginmemphis (at City Winery NYC)

Jaime O’Neill was my poetry teacher in college. He taught me to listen to the music of words. As a great lover of music himself, he understands how rhythm and melody are expressed in both mediums. Jaime is also a long-time family friend through a series of connections from when Mur was in grade school. He (along with his brilliant wife, Karen) has also been huge supporter of my musical endeavors, showing up at concerts and sending notes of encouragement and interviewing me for local publications in advance of my shows. Recently, Jaime and Karen lost their home and all their belongings in the Camp Fire and he has written a touching column in the @sfchronicle about the loss of their personal library. I’m just sharing this because I love Jaime and Karen and this is beautifully written and terribly sad and I hope you take a moment to read it. #campfire (at Paradise, California)

There’s a magic parking lot in Nashville. If you stand in the middle of it and turn all the way ‘round, you will see the dim sum where no matter how much you eat, you can never spend more than $20 a person and the giant Asian supermarket and the better bubble tea place and the small Vietnamese market with the fresh made mochi. There’s also a store that sells snow skis but it’s easy to ignore. Happy birthday @tristanscroggins. We hope you enjoyed your magic parking lot lunch day. (I’ll be tagging all three of us plus @sethtaylor427 since he’s the one on the phone with Ashby.) #birthdayboi #magicparkinglot #westsidebestside (at Lucky Bamboo China Bistro)

Oh, hello! Here’s our beautiful Armistead-designed Nashville Dobro Camp poster to remind you that registration for Nashville Dobro Camp opens February 1, unless you’re a previous camper and then you can register January 25th. It’s going to be so lovely. It was lovely last year and I have no reason to think it will be any less so this time. June 21-23, 2019 and you can check it all out at www.nashvilledobrocamp.com If you come to camp, you get a poster. That’s reason enough. #dobro #nashville #dobrocamp #theolhounddog (at Ridgetop, Tennessee)

More New York beautifulness to share. If you, like me, made a commitment to focus more on the art of women, both past and contemporary, you could do worse than spending a little time getting to know Hilma af Klint, the Swedish painter whose life’s work is now on exhibit at the Guggenheim. Spirits told her to make the paintings. Who are we to disagree? #motherdaughterroadtrip #nyc2019 #rosicrucian (at Guggenheim Museum)
Good morning friends! Mur and I left New York a few days ago but the content isn’t over yet. You thought we might have traipsed all over Manhattan for four days without stumbling upon some perfect places to experience #dancingmur??? You’d be wrong. Here’s an example of how she reacts to being told to engage in only “passive activity.” Ha. Not a chance. #soundtrackbyadamhurt #nyc2019 #motherdaughterroadtrip (at Central Park)

Here’s an unvarnished review of the Chris Botti show at the Blue Note in NY. I can see why a lot of people would love this show. @eldarmusic is an unbelievable pianist. The rhythm section was one of the finest I’ve seen. That is all. #nyc2019 #motherdaughterroadtrip (at Blue Note Jazz Club, NY)

I don’t generally take pictures in the restaurants we go to when we’re in New York. They’re often sorta fancy and really quiet and it just seems like bad form. But let me tell you, everyone else is doing it. We watched so many couples and groups of people taking pictures of their food and each other and mostly just silently scrolling. Am I crazy to be just totally weirded out by this? These places are expensive and the servers are expert trained and the food is meticulously conceived and executed, all to create a memorable experience. But no one in there is going to remember any of it. I did take some pictures in @patisseriechanson though because it was more casual and it seemed more appropriate for the vibe there. And not for nothin, that was a fabulous Sunday brunch and highly recommended. As someone who has binged all the GBBOs lately, they are killing the lamination on the puff. #motherdaughterroadtrip #nyc2019 #theflavorsarecomingthrough (at Chanson)

Well, speaking of the Tony Awards, I think we now know what’s going to sweep the plays this year… #tokillamockingbird #jeffdaniels #aaronsorkinisagenius (by the way, “Aaron Sorkin is a genius” is a fairly common hashtag, for a reason.) #nyc2019 #motherdaughterroadtrip (at Shubert Theatre)
I am excited to embark on a new chapter of my working life - I recently gave my notice to the Pam Tillis organization and will no longer be touring with her or Lorrie Morgan (on their awesome Grits and Glamour Tour). I must admit, I'm sad to be leaving. It's been an incredible four years and I have learned so much. Thanks to Pam, her amazing husband/manager Matt Spicher, and my bandmates, especially the lovely and talented Mary Sue Englund, with whom I spent more time over the last few years than I did with my husband. And I wouldn't trade a minute of it...
