You Can be a FiddleStar

I post things about fiddling. And how we can all be better at it.

Last night we discovered that walking in Nashville has its advantages. There’s a back way from @cartervintageguitars to @thestationinn which involves zero pedal taverns, minimal bachelorette exposure, and this festive stencil. You should try it. #nashvillebanjocamp #nashville #nashvillenights #banjoplayerswalking (at Peg Leg Porker)

Who’s in your garage? Mike Munford is in mine. Here is the IBMA Banjo Player of the Year working on arrangements for the camper duet recordings. He’s meticulous and he cares. #nashvillebanjocamp #banjo #nashville #banjoteacherswhocare (at Fiddlestar)

The most important part of rehearsal with Mary Sue is picking out the outfits. We are so excited to show you all the clothes we have planned for our California tour. Also, we’d like to think the songs are good too. By the way, for those of you who didn’t know, we’re playing one of the concerts in a town called Rescue which is just east of Sacramento. There’s been some confusion. #allyearlong #meganandmarysue #californiatour #poinsettiadress (at Nashville, Tennessee)

We’ve been friends for a long time but last night was the first time we’ve ever played a gig together and it was an absolute blast. I loved singing harmony and playing twin fiddle in the Luke Bulla Band. I’ve always been enamored with Luke’s singing and of course his fiddling is, well, you know. If you haven’t grabbed a copy of #wholovesyoubetter then you are most definitely not as happy as you could be. These two photos are 20 years apart and I’m sure we’ll be able to take another one 20 years from now. #oldfriends #nashville #woodsongs (at WoodSongs Old-time Radio Hour)

Taught about 80 people to play the mandolin today at the #countrymusichalloffameandmuseum so if you aren’t careful you will run into someone on the streets of Nashville who will play Wild Thing on the mandolin at full volume and end it with a high kick and windmill because that’s how we roll. #mandolin #nashville #bluegrass #threechordsandthetruth (at Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum)

Many of you know that I’m not a fan of the day after Thanksgiving. I’ve lost a lot of people close to me on that day, and in the week before and after, while we’re at it. Since about 1995 I’ve been calling it No Thanksgiving, which is a name my dear friend Tyler Swanson came up with. Back in the day, Tyler would come up with random things to do on that day to help me take my mind off the negative memories and I’ve always been so grateful for his friendship and wacky ideas. Today I continued the tradition with @ashbyfrank who spent the afternoon with me looking at Samurai swords, eating ice cream, and trying out vintage instruments. It’s been a good No Thanksgiving and I’m grateful yet again for good friends. Also, get yourself to the Frist very soon. The Japanese exhibit is great but you can miss The Visitors film installation upstairs. #nothanksgiving #nashville #focusonthepositive (at Frist Center for the Visual Arts)

I never imagined marrying into a family that would treat me this kindly, this supportively, and with so much love. But here we are and here I am, as surprised and delighted as can be. They’re a goofy bunch, in all the right ways, and each one of them has a heart of gold. Today I’m grateful for them. Also, nice new tailpiece on that SG… #givingthanks #myinlawsrock #gibsonguitars

I am excited to embark on a new chapter of my working life - I recently gave my notice to the Pam Tillis organization and will no longer be touring with her or Lorrie Morgan (on their awesome Grits and Glamour Tour). I must admit, I'm sad to be leaving. It's been an incredible four years and I have learned so much. Thanks to Pam, her amazing husband/manager Matt Spicher, and my bandmates, especially the lovely and talented Mary Sue Englund, with whom I spent more time over the last few years than I did with my husband. And I wouldn't trade a minute of it...
