You Can be a FiddleStar

I post things about fiddling. And how we can all be better at it.

We went to visit @adamspickoftheday at work today. Winston was, as you can imagine, very popular with the customers. #sirwinstoncup #bostonterrier #bostonterriersofinstagram #cartervintageguitars #takeyourdogtoworkday (at Carter Vintage Guitars)

Happy #thankfulthursday my friends! Today’s post is about music, as it often is. Specifically though, it’s about the people in your life (Marc Maron calls it the “big brother” effect) who hip you to incredible music you wouldn’t have found on your own. Like, senior year when my friend Max made me sneak off campus and go to his house at lunch to listen to Nevermind on vinyl, or just a year later @kbbauman teaching me about Mark Eitzel and insisting that I reckon with Dinosaur Jr. Or in 1985 when Lisa Barrett made me listen to hours of Major and Benny on reel to reel or in 2003 when Erik Thomas insisted we perform like 23 (ok, it might have been two) Buddy Miller songs in Due West and I began to really process what great songwriting was all about. Either way, all that music has been rolling around in my head my whole life and has become the sum total of who I am and who I’m still yet to be as a musician. Today I got to meet Buddy Miller for the first time (taping of the Buddy and Jim show with @lukebulla) and I realized how thankful I am for all of those enthusiastic people throwing all that incredible music at me all this time. #buddyandjuliemiller #wholovesyoubetter @jimlauderdale1 @puremusicnashville @sxmoutlaw (at Nashville, Tennessee)

Happy #internationalwomensday Here are some incredible women that I try to celebrate every day. Young, slightly less young, whatever. Every one of these women is just out there being awesome. Also, I could put up multi-frame pictures all day and still not capture all the amazing women I know and love. This collage does not represent the totality of great women I know. It is only the beginning. #spreadlove #feministisnotadirtyword (at Fiddlestar)

Did some painting yesterday and finally had to cover over one of the great memories of this house. FiddleStar Youth Camp 2009 was a blast. And these girls were every kind of awesome. Not to mention, as far as I know, every one of them is still playing the fiddle or involved in music in some way. Some of them are even teachers themselves now. The writing may be covered by a new coat of perfect taupe, but these girls are always with me. #fiddlecamp #fiddlestar #tbt #fiddle #theyretallernow (at Fiddlestar)

Life is always better with these two. As you probably know, I’m not actually from around here, but I got lucky enough to befriend a couple of actual southerners who help me navigate these parts but somehow still think like I do. I guess the other word for that is “friends”. They’re also hilarious and talented and probably brilliant but I would never tell them that. Here we are, leaning on the most leaned on sink in North America. #thestationinn #thedarrellbrothers #friends #findyourtribe (at Station Inn)

Today’s #thankfulthursday stems from a recent tragedy, the death of Northwest musician and record label owner Phil Williams. For years I have recommended #voyagerrecords to my students but now I want to make sure everyone knows how valuable they’ve been in my life and how grateful I am to Phil and Vivian for their commitment to traditional music of all stripes. Benny Thomasson with his son Jerry from the Weiser Reunion CD (well, I bought it as a cassette first…) and the Fiddle Jam Session album with Texas Shorty and Dick Barrett and a bunch of other incredible players - so many of my most influential fiddle moments came from albums that Phil and Vivian made possible. It’s also worth mentioning that since I’ve been attending the National Old Time Fiddlers Contest in Weiser, ID (1981 was my first year, for those of you keeping track…) I have enjoyed listening to Phil and Vivian jamming on the front lawn of our motel every afternoon. They never tired of playing tunes. They’ve never tired of promoting the music. Please check out the important work Phil and Vivian have done over the years. He will be missed. #fiddle #oldtime #texasstyle #guitar #mandolin #dancefiddling (at Voyager Recordings & Publicati)

I am excited to embark on a new chapter of my working life - I recently gave my notice to the Pam Tillis organization and will no longer be touring with her or Lorrie Morgan (on their awesome Grits and Glamour Tour). I must admit, I'm sad to be leaving. It's been an incredible four years and I have learned so much. Thanks to Pam, her amazing husband/manager Matt Spicher, and my bandmates, especially the lovely and talented Mary Sue Englund, with whom I spent more time over the last few years than I did with my husband. And I wouldn't trade a minute of it...
