You Can be a FiddleStar

I post things about fiddling. And how we can all be better at it.

Here’s a funny thing I’ve learned to spot since I’ve lived in the South. Behold the tree which has been struck by lightening. My favorite part is the spiral pattern. That’s good stuff. You know, unless it falls on you or yours. #walkswithwinston #lighteningtree #springstorms #lifebelowthemasondixon (at Ridgetop, Tennessee)

Here’s what good friends we are - this beautiful book was a gift to both of us from another dear friend (thanks @mandolin2842) and we were directed to basically share custody of it. And we’re gonna. When we’re both dead it just goes to the cats anyway… #giftswithfriends #bluegrassinthenetherlands #thecatsgetitallwhenwedie #bffs (at Ugly Mugs Coffee and Tea - Nashville, TN)

One of the best parts of my day, especially this time of year, is when I’m up early and walking #sirwinstoncup and a beautiful pair of Canadian geese fly by on their way to spend the day in the pond across the street. I spent some years living right on the Sacramento River and although I don’t always have the fondest memories of my time in that house, I always loved the sight and sounds of the geese that flew by every morning. Maybe these are them. How long do geese live? There they are, center left of the photo. You can probably hear them from where you are. #honk #walkswithwinston (at Fiddlestar)

Sunday. I tried out the obligatory Nashville wall pic. I wore a hat. I petted Señor McGuire’s dog. My friend bought a guitar. #nashville #livinthedream #senormcguire #thatshiscar #myfavoriteboys (at Carter Vintage Guitars)

Now this, this is a #tbt my dears. That guy on the far left, that’s @peterahilliard and I have not seen him since we were in madrigal choir together in 1992. I also sang in the vocal jazz quartet for which he arranged and was never as well-rehearsed as he would have liked. The guy in the middle is his brilliant musical partner and together they are writing incredible modern operas as @hilliardandboresi In fact, my Memphis people, go see #theblueviola this weekend. You won’t be sorry. Peter was the inspiring musical genius in my midst when I was younger and I could not be more delighted to have reconnected with him and begun the long process of catching up and having animated musical discussions like lo, those many years ago. #opera #choirnerdreunion #reddingca (at Capitol Grille)

These days, every time my mom comes to visit she brings me one of the many giant scrapbooks she’s created over the years. “Less to clean out when I die”, she says. Fair point. And more fodder for #tbt is my point. Here is am, flanked my two of the biggest musical influences in my young life - on the left is Al Myers, who backed me up in every contest for about 20 years. He learned the chords to every one of my weird tunes and he helped me make decisions about what to play when I was too discombobulated to think. And he was always right. On the right we have Junior Daugherty - by example he taught me that danceability and a real sense of melody would serve me better in the long run than any fancy pants musical posturing ever would. He also taught me Snowshoes. Which would have been plenty, all on its own. #fiddle #dancefiddler #rickhobbsguitar #norcal #bowlcut #mtlassen (at Happy Valley, California)

I am excited to embark on a new chapter of my working life - I recently gave my notice to the Pam Tillis organization and will no longer be touring with her or Lorrie Morgan (on their awesome Grits and Glamour Tour). I must admit, I'm sad to be leaving. It's been an incredible four years and I have learned so much. Thanks to Pam, her amazing husband/manager Matt Spicher, and my bandmates, especially the lovely and talented Mary Sue Englund, with whom I spent more time over the last few years than I did with my husband. And I wouldn't trade a minute of it...
