April

great show! Her albums are excellent and she is great teacher. Keep

Brian
Wicklund is revolutionizing beginning fiddle teaching with his incredible
American Fiddle Method series. He also plays a mean bluegrass fiddle
and is currently playing with the Kathy Kallick Band. Find out more
about Brian at www.brianwicklund.com |
Ron
Stewart is just about the hottest bluegrass fiddler in the business.
He plays with the legendary J.D. Crowe and the New South. Ron is
also in demand as a session player and can be found on a large number
of contemporary bluegrass recordings. You?ll love his banjo, guitar,
and mandolin work as well.

John
Francis is one of my favorite Texas-style fiddle players. But hailing
from the West Coast, John brings a lot of his own interpretation
to the style.

Texas Shorty (James
Chancellor) is truly one of the legends of Texas fiddling. His many
recordings are like the audio versions of Texas fiddling 101.

Daniel Carwile plays
so many styles, and all of them impeccably. He a true innovator and
an incredibly unique musician. He and his very talented wife Amy run
a teaching studio and are known as very capable instructors.

I have recently fallen in love with the contemporary acoustic sounds
of The Creaking
Tree String Quartet. A big part of the reason I love them is the
unique, fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants fiddling of John Showman. He makes
this Toronto group rock!
The Clarridges turned me on to one of the true young innovators in fiddling.
He comes from a Scottish fiddling background but has taken music to
a whole new level. I guess he can best be categorized as a jazz player,
but he's so much more than any one category. Check out Jeremy
Kittel.
Can you even deny his work with the Tony Rice Unit? Or his fiddling
with the Lonesome River Band? You can't. I can't. He's so soulful. You
must listen to Rickie
Simpkins.
Tim
Crouch must be one of the best kept secrets in the session scene.
He never plays the same thing twice and I'm starting to think he is
one of the most inventive players in the traditional scene. He really
knows how to serve a song. I first became aware of his fiddle playing
on Bryan Sutton's "Bluegrass Guitar Album". Incredible stuff.
Tashina and Tristan
Clarridge are two of the hottest young players in traditional music.
They have both won more awards than I can count but are branching out
into Cape Breton, bluegrass, and jazz.

| Danita
Rast, Roberta Rast, and Tonya Rast Hopkins are some truly hot fiddle
siblings! These three girls have multitudes of awards to their credit
and are scattered across the country playing everything from classical
to Cape Breton to Texas style to Celtic rock and more! Keep an eye
out for them, either alone, or together as the Rast Sisters. |

J'anna Jacoby has
taken fiddling to a whole new level. Originally a classical violinist
and contest fiddler, she has a become a master of rock, jazz, and many
other styles. J?anna is currently the fiddle player for Rod Stewart
and has toured the world many times over.

Bobby Hicks is a
longtime hero of many and a recent hero of mine. His work with the Bluegrass
Album Band changed my idea of bluegrass fiddling forever. He is still
going strong and finally pursuing a dream of his - his own band, Hazel
Creek.

Herman Johnson is
one of the classiest gentleman to ever draw the bow across the strings.
His playing has always struck me as both perfectly traditional and contemporary
at the same time. No website for Herman, but you can find transcriptions
and recordings of his classic tunes at
www.sheetmusicplus.com
One of the most
exciting young players to come on the scene, Casey Driessen is changing
the way we all view the fiddle. His rhythm work is stunning! He complements
the music of his bandleader Tim O'Brien perfectly.

I ran across Bethany
Dick at fiddle contests all over the West and always loved her playing
(not surprising, we had the same early mentors - Dick and Lisa Barrett)
but her move to Nashville has cemented her as one of the up and coming
country/bluegrass stars. Catch her with Pam Tillis when you can.

My dear friend Paul
Lee has continued to grow into an amazing bluegrass and old-time fiddler.
Since he joined the fabulous band Open Road, his playing has only gotten
hotter and more widely recognized.

| Jeremy
Garrett recently made the move to Nashville from his home in Idaho
and has been climbing the bluegrass ladder rapidly. His beautiful
tenor voice, excellent contemporary fiddle playing, and professional
stage presence have made him a hot commodity in Music City. Check
out his latest project, the uber-hot Stringdusters. |
